Adding tiered planters can bring diversity to yard

How many levels do you want your tiered or stepped planter to have? Some gardeners like the effect of working with odd numbers, so they would use three or five containers, depending on the situation and size. Sometimes just two levels is enough to create the effect you want.

When choosing containers, first look around to see what you have on hand.  Anything that can hold soil and water (with drainage holes) will do and if you have that item in multiple sizes, then half your work is done.  Consider reusing clay or plastic drainage pipe, metal or plastic tubs, or secondhand clay or plastic pots.  If you do not have anything you can reuse, then head for the store and find something suitable.  For a really large planter, consider wooden half-barrels of various sizes.

Your choice of plants will depend on the location of your planter and whether you want to use perennials or change out the plants with each season.  Pick plants that require the same amount of sun or shade and have similar watering needs.  Avoid fastgrowing or overly aggressive plants that might take over.  Look for a variety of growth habits that will combine nicely, such as upright, cascading and plastic bushing, to use in the different levels.

Use a good quality potting soil as you would when planting any type of container.  When using tall or deep containers, you can fill the lower portion of the pot with gravel or broken clay pot shards to take up space.  Be sure that the next level pot has a firm footing so you don’t end up with a leaning tower (unless that is the effect you want).  When using open-ended containers, such as clay-chimney flue liners, be sure to sink the base of the pipe into the soil to stabilize it.

Caring for your tiered planter should be just as easy as any other potted plant if you have followed these steps.  If a plant begins to outgrow the container, give it a good pruning back. Water your planter slowly so that it has time to soak in at all levels and not just run off the sides.
